A Celebration of Long-Lasting Friendship

Sorry I haven't been updating lately! I've only just started getting out of my depressed hermit status this weekend. I'm kind of not over my negative feelings yet, but just enough to be a bit motivated to start working again. I ended up losing my HDD (hopefully somewhere in my house) and that's pretty much why I haven't went into detail about my 2nd mission trip to Guyana or anything. I also got some new things (like a new phone, which I'm typing from now!) But I'm in no real rush to make a post on it right now.

I just wanted to talk about a recent outing with my best friend, where we celebrated 9 years of friendship!  It may seem a bit silly, but when you go through so much like deceiving friends, friends' deaths, and other life situations, it feels really good to recognize the length of a close friendship.

I remember we became friends on the very first day of high school~ we were both in the same Math class during period 2, and that was how we met.

Since freshman year we were inseparable; friends came and gone, drama with birdlike chicks, through my own HS love-drama b.s., and her struggles with her family and her hood in Spanish Harlem. I started dressing lolita and she was the only one who didn't reject me; when she gave birth to her daughter I was there with her. And then even more recently, me finding myself in God, and her following and seeking the same relationship with God, having been baptized a month ago during a conference revival.

I can say I never really lived life up until the point where we started hanging out. So much happened around us but we made it out of everything together. We never fought and broke our friendship. We cussed at each other, told truth to each other, cried with each other, and acted plain retarded together. We were always mistaken for sisters, cousins, and lol lesbians because we were together that much.

God has kept us through 9 years and there's been so much growth between us.. we had to recognize it.

So, we went to Gyukaku for some serious grubbing.. like 125 dollars worth of grub. LOL

A little collage of not even everything we got... that we took as we talked about other issues going on. Miso soup, sweet potato tempura sticks, shrimp dumplings, miso-bbq chicken wings.. sukiyaki bimbimbap, spinach garlic, grilled onion, and what probably ended up being a pound+ of different meats LOL and then a buttload of pina colada-mojitos and caramelized banana splits. .. yeah, it was pretty intense.

Obligatory bathroom selfies

Outfit shot~ F21, Strawberry, Rainbow's.

I would never trade my friendship with her for anything. I've had too many fakes, d*ckriders, "underlings", flaky insecure people, flame starters, you name it. I'm over most people that try to interact with me. One of the only relationships I'll truly care for is my friendship with Muffy.

My general advice on friendship?

Don't base your friendships on location or hobby or fashion. Get deeper than just that, when you know its safe to. Be able to discern people's personalities and habits and determine whether or not they're good for you, or toxic.

Always value someone who tell or receive things like it is, even if it hurts. Who aren't afraid to level you down for long-term benefits, someone who you know aren't up in people's business over trying to sort themselves out and live their life.

Be receptive to their thoughts and concerns, and criticisms. Don't be selfish about your own interests.

Together, be able to pick each other off the ground and support each other.
And be prepared to lift each other up to higher ground. Be prepared to sacrifice.

Most of all, have fun every minute of it.

Janelle Monae x Target "Electric Pirate Radio" Event 9/9/13

The last two or three weeks might have been nothing but depression for me, but I was fortunate enough to get tickets into a private Janelle Monae event in promotion of her new album "The Electric Lady". If you've been following me for a while, you'd know how I feel about Janelle's music and her artistic spirit. When I got this opportunity my mood instantly lifted up.

First off-- let me talk about her album. She let VH1 embed a stream of her whole album a week before it's release on their website, and when I tell you everyone and their mother was on it? My whole facebook friendslist was enchanted by every song. I liked the ArchAndroid and Metropolis as well, but there was something about this album that just made it the best so far. Every song flowed into the next... and it makes me nostaglic of all the old school tunes from back in the day. The entire album was just fluid and your ears would just melt into the next song. It's very hard to even choose favorites because it all seems like one (hour and change-long) track. Seriously. But the ones I keep replaying over and over again would be "It's Code" (very Jackson 5), "Ghetto Woman" (a song for her mother), Dorothy Dandridge Eyes, Can't Live Without Your Love, and Primetime.

...You already see I practically listed more than half the album. Yyyyeahhhhh. Yeah.

Event photos and story under the cut!

F.I.T. Presentation

The Monday after Sakura Matsuri, I had my little presentation on Japanese Fashion in the West at the Fashion Institute of Technology. It was nothing big, just Dr. Kawamura's small class that studies Japanese fashion. I think it went pretty well, my friend Grace came along to model lolita clothing while I was more representative of gyaru. Wishing I looked more together because I looked so washed out from the weeks before. Makeup and everything seemed bad because I was in between being lazy, tired (it was so early in the morning e_e) and trying to look the part. Well...

Outfit shot, once everything was said and done...
D.I.A. hoodie, MARS-esque tights, my OTK boots from taobao.. kind of wishing I had gotten my more recent purchases before this picture LOL also need more belts...

Grace's outfit~

Pearl cross

Some more camwhore shots once I finally got home from eating lunch and stuff with Grace and her friend:

Yeah... I look so tired. I think I was up all night the night before so that didn't help much..

Dr. Kawamura was nice enough to make little gift bags for us as thanks for the presentation! It was full  of these Japanese goodies and whatnot~

Potholders... coasters for soups and drinks.. a leopard print tote within a matching pouch (bagception), a cute brown&pink phone charm, and two mini cupcakes in a cute little pink container wrapped with a hairbow (not shown, I sort of ate them before I took the picture = =), and then also a signed copy of her school book entitled "Fashioning Japanese Subcultures". So happy! Especially for the book! xD I hope to do a review on it soon~

Random Church OOTD

A few weeks ago I was playing around with some of my Liz Lisa goods and make a cute casualish lolita outfit for service that day~

I had just washed my hair within that week and I was a too lazy to really flat-iron it-- so I thought of this hairstyle instead. When I thought it up, I was thinking of some Micky/Minnie Mouse designs I've seen where their ears are sort of propped to the side. It came out pretty cute, although a bit messy! Next time I attempt it I plan to clean it up and figure out how to part it nicely and stuff.

The outfit itself is pretty light-- not too heavy with lolita accessories and things~

Rundown:
Top - Liz Lisa
Skirt, hair ties - Baby, the Stars Shine Bright
Shoes - An*tai*na
Fur collar - Forever 21
Other accessories (not seen)~ all offbrand

Gigi in NYC~

Two weeks ago my girl Gigi from North Carolina came up to NYC for the weekend~ Even though I was packed with work and church stuff, I managed to squeeze a bit of time to hang out with her and some other girls.

My outfit for the night. Since I was coming right out of work and then running to meet people, I didn't have much choice as far as dressing up. I just got my favorite tights and a black cowl-neck OP and work it with leggings and my black work sneakers. I didn't want to bring my boots with me since it'd be a lot to carry. Plus my knee's been acting worse.. you can kind of see my food-pregs tummy here xD blah

Makeup shot.

I ran into Gigi and another local gal Malia on St Mark's where we were supposed to meet and eat dinner at. It totally skipped my mind that it was St. Patrick's Day weekend and of course all the places in the city were going to be booked up.. and that people on St. Mark's were going to act dumb.

Since a lot of the places were booked till late (and I was on-call for Yokocho) we roamed around for a bit~ went to Search & Destroy, where Mei later met up with us, and then we were sitting and chilling in 8Bit&Up until it was closer to the time we would hopefully get seated.

A couple of pictures once we got settled in Village Yokocho~

Me and Mei. The lighting in there was really dim so my pictures weren't coming out too well. Mei's phone + camera apps made us look light as hell though LOL not posting those xD

Mei and Gigi.

We were obviously hungry so we ordered a thing of yakisoba.. I got my usual pumpkin & onion skewers, a gyoza soup and shared okonomiyaki with Mei. The last two didn't make it to photos because we devoured the mess out of that crap.

And obligatory camwhoring when I got home~

Even though it was a tiny bit of time, I enjoyed meeting Gigi and I hope she comes back to the city soon!

Pre-Lent nomming

Two weeks ago I went with my loli bbys Chris, Laura, and Rune for some noms before Chris started Lent and before Laura left off to Katsucon for the weekend~ I was still recovering from bronchitis, but I felt well enough to eat (being me, of course, nothing can make me turn down food  )

We went to Gyu-kaku near Times Square--

Pork belly, yakishabu, kalbi chuck on the grill~

Some of my meat, along with some garlic rice which is really good~

And then I found out they recently added taiyaki with ice cream to their dessert menu... and I had to get it. Had to.

My poor fishy, after being warmed on the grill~

My outfit for the day~

I dressed up yesterday to participate in a little style challenge~

I've been wanting to get this sheer top from Rainbow's for the longest time. It reminded me a lot of the vertical striped tops that were in style for the past year in gal mags, so I had to snatch it up. I'm probably going to find nicer buttons to replace it with, and quick-stitch it to be a rolled-up sleeve. They had other types.. in other colors... kind of tempted to get a red x black striped one next. I also need to get a regular black miniskirt or fitted shorts ; o;

I wish my legs looked this good all the time >w> hopefully whatever corrective work I need to do helps it... e _e Hoping to get a belt to custom it DIA-style to go with this one day~ also a prettier top for underneath.

I plan to get my hair trimmed and layered again, once I get a touch-up sometime in Oct/Nov. Better styling and all that = u= Also, my Prisila pieces from Taobao are on their way so soon I'll have fun experimenting with those. I love the way I look in these photos though~

Long Overdue Otakon post

Almost a month later xD

Otakon this year was pretty good. Super busy with my friend's booth, and knowing how Inner Harbor is after 8pm, not much to do :c No panels or anything this year, either. Nothing seemed very interesting... besides the cosplay, of course.

The best part was being able to be covered in 100 alpacas..

(Friday)
and then wearing the maid costume we had to wear for the booth.

(Saturday)
I actually didn't wear lolita -at all- this time around, even though I had an outfit just in case. Just had no time for it.

Me with one of h.Naoto mascots~ I really don't follow h.Naoto to know whether this is Hangry or Angry xD

Friday night our friend Ariel (miyu_sakura on LJ, ex-mod of EGL) met us at our hotel after she got off of work and so me, her, Alek and Susan chilled in the bar area with Chinese takeout and drinks and talked for hours. It was hilarious. We went from old EGL, new EGL, local comms, Ariel's old college stories, retarded stuff like the whole tumblr 'activism' or whatever.. and things like trans-ethnicity and at the end of the night we were basically all in tears. It was such a good talk ; A; can't wait to hang out with her again

Saturday evening I managed to meet Miyabi in person for the first time. Holy crap, she was so tiny xD I was able to put my hands around her thighs, it was amazing. She was staying in the Radisson like me, so she just stopped down before she went out with her friends and got drunk..

before I decided that pinning my wig up was retarded.

I met up with my bby Laura after the Masquerade and went to the liquor store and got some beer and stuff, and headed back to her hotel. Yanise came and stopped by after maid cafe stuff with some booze of her own, and we were drinking for a bit. In the hotel Laura stayed at they had doors leading to the next room over (for those who try to book two rooms together), and so we were hearing the neighbors through the doors... playing Final Fantasy music or something. Or no! Chrono Cross xD We decided to act stupid and start knocking on their door to open up, and sending notes under their door xDDD It was pretty funny, I made a drinking game off of it too. At some point Yanise left to meet with her friends, and he group next door was about to leave off for the convention too. They knocked on Laura's front door and when she opened it.. you just see a big hand grabbing the corners and keeping it from closing. Outside was two tallll guys who tried to act scary. We were jokingly going "We're gonna get raped DDD:"

After they had talked with us for a minute and left, me and Laura decided to check out the OtaRave since I've never been to a con rave before.

We ran into Yanise one more time, and then we ran into Miyabi.. who was sitting on the floor completely drunk xD She named Laura "the blue b*tch" and we were just laughing, especially when her friends came over and tried to get her to stand up.. but she was done. Completely done. She'd walk straight and then try to turn and then she would just drop.

We were in tears. We made our way to the rave, which was pretty live! I was surprised. I thought it would suck terribly but the crowd was pretty good. There were some funny groups like people doing street-fighter style dance-offs and crap like that. We made our way near the front for a bit and danced for a bit there ("danced" for me because I have no sense of rhythm whatsoever). Maybe 30-45 minutes later we made our way out to run into some of the NY lolis chilling around outside the rave area. After talking a bit I made my way back to the hotel since I didn't want to be out too late.

Sunday... was my first actual cosplay with Michiko, but I hope to redo it one day :c Since my circle lenses didn't come on time I wore my shades all day, plus before the con I was an idiot and re-cut my bangs so.. I wasn't completely satisfied with how I looked. Then to top it all off, my right knee got swelled with fluid again so... yeah .___.

I also had forgot my drawings at home, like an idiot which really killed me. I had my cousin go log onto my computer and resend files so I can reprint and redraw the rest of it.. but, I managed to redraw it well, and then I went to the con to meet up with my friend Nicole, who was my Atsuko.

While I was waiting for her I decided to get in character so I wouldn't be bored... and omg xDDD It was more fun than I thought. It was amazing. I really enjoyed myself during that time. And I had people recognize who I was because of it!

Once Nicole popped up, we headed over to the photoshoot suite and did a small photo shoot. It was kind of rushed since we both had to get back to work! I only liked a few of the pictures xD
My Jambo

Favorite picture of the two of us xD

I hated that my contouring barely showed up because of the lighting.. But, it was fun nonetheless. Afterwards I rushed all the way to the other side of the con, and worked until the booth was broken down and stuff..

In the evening, we headed a couple of blocks up to find some restaurant to eat at, and ran into this one place called Joss Cafe & Sushi Bar. We didn't bother with sushi, and went for their much cheaper tapas-type stuff instead. I personally had two servings of takoyaki, white rice, and strawberry soda, and shared a rose pork bun, gyoza and other stuff with the other girls. Overall, we had a good time.

Monday morning me and Susan ended up leaving on the same bus as Victoria (Parfait Doll), Dalin (La Vida Frills) and their friend back to NYC. My outfit for that day..
