Janelle Monae x Target "Electric Pirate Radio" Event 9/9/13

The last two or three weeks might have been nothing but depression for me, but I was fortunate enough to get tickets into a private Janelle Monae event in promotion of her new album "The Electric Lady". If you've been following me for a while, you'd know how I feel about Janelle's music and her artistic spirit. When I got this opportunity my mood instantly lifted up.

First off-- let me talk about her album. She let VH1 embed a stream of her whole album a week before it's release on their website, and when I tell you everyone and their mother was on it? My whole facebook friendslist was enchanted by every song. I liked the ArchAndroid and Metropolis as well, but there was something about this album that just made it the best so far. Every song flowed into the next... and it makes me nostaglic of all the old school tunes from back in the day. The entire album was just fluid and your ears would just melt into the next song. It's very hard to even choose favorites because it all seems like one (hour and change-long) track. Seriously. But the ones I keep replaying over and over again would be "It's Code" (very Jackson 5), "Ghetto Woman" (a song for her mother), Dorothy Dandridge Eyes, Can't Live Without Your Love, and Primetime.

...You already see I practically listed more than half the album. Yyyyeahhhhh. Yeah.

Event photos and story under the cut!

#unfriendlypoclolitas Picnic

As you might have guessed by now, June has been a very busy month for me...

One weekend I planned a picnic with a couple of my lolita friends as a little 'getaway' day. It was very much needed after recent events that were back to back to back every weekend.

We joked and dubbed that day as #unfriendlyPOClolitas because out of the couple of friends that showed, it was 4 black lolitas and one Asian.yeah... we're stupid like that.
Of course I was dumb and forgot my camera, so most of these photos were stolen from the other girls.

Me fixing myself...

Not sure if there ever was a picture shot buttt we had some assorted sandwiches~ scones~ onigiri~ fruit salad~ Marie cookies~ soda and also a lovely spiked fruit punch that Nicole made LOL

Some photos from the night before~

We spent the lovely afternoon watching people nearly crash into each other on the Lake, a marriage proposal on the water, and a bunch of newlywed couples passing by and taking wedding photos.. as people talked about bad anime and Animal Crossing and Monster Hunter

Lexie and Rune

Nicole with Rune and her lolface

A friend of Aria's boyfriend who came by and chilled for a while

Nicole, Rune, Aria, myself, and Lexie

It was a really chill day.. that I ended with a macaron shake. From Central Park we had made our way down to Columbus Circle, all the way down to 42nd. As we talked about the struggle and people touching Rune's hair xD

Mhmmmmm ♥

AnimeNext 2013

Earlier in June I attended AnimeNext for the first time. AnimeNext has always been one of those small-scale conventions that for years I've heard stories about it being subpar (besides the friends that hang out there), but this year I gave it a bit of a chance since Baby, the Stars Shine Bright was going to be a special guest, with fashion show and all. Most of all, Akinori Isobe was going to be there, which RARELY happens, which made it a little more interesting than when the brand usually visits places like Otakon or AKon, etc. It really makes me wonder why he would come to these disorganized events versus the actual huge cons that BABY goes to time and time again xD

Lolita Boating ~ 6/1/2013

For the summer Lolita Day this year my friend Petrina of Lolita and the City planned a lolita boat party aboard the Shearwater, a vintage schooner owned by Manhattan by Sail. For about 2 hours or so we sailed out into New York Harbor, catching some rays and serious breeze. It was about 90F that day, so pulling out into the waters was a great relief for everyone.

As we boarded... I got there right on time. Meanwhile Petrina and people were laughing about if I were to miss the boat...e___e because I tend to be late to everything. (Trust and believe I'll be there right on time for anything I dropped serious dough on = =)

Now for random-ordered photos..

A bit of princessy camwhoring

I had a skype chat/interview with someone and I decided to dress up ..

My makeup was awfully light. Even my eyemakeup, which I honestly hated this time around. Didn't stop me from showing off though

Confession: Unless I plan to go out, I don't wear base makeup in my photos & videos. Half the time any flaws are barely noticeable, especially when I manipulate natural sunlight to flood my face xD
I like to do it once in a while because in some shots (like above) it makes my face look a bit sunkissed. Some people may like it, others not, but I love it~ ♥

If you haven't noticed, I also tend to wear a lot of lolita mixed with himegal items. Especially Angelic Pretty's more simpler prints (like their floral prints), a lot of their more 'basic' stuff look very close to some himegyaru stuff (asides from the lolita silhouette). So rather than go all out lolita with blouse and etc, I usually have a bit of a himegal feel.

Webcam shot~ low quality shots like from webcams are so good when it comes to half-ass camera whoring xD

Anddd with that, I should probably hop on the bandwagon to tell you guys to follow me on Bloglovin' since Google Reader is getting shut down!
Honestly as far as I've heard, Google Friend Connect (what Blogger uses) and Google Reader (Google/gmail) are two different features. So GFC as far as I know will not be shut down next week like Google Reader is, however GFC has been derpy for the past two months for me, so I'm assuming that Blogger isn't going to be fixing the glitches and stuff with that anytime soon. They might even just leave it to waste... Read here for more on that!

So that being said, JUST IN CASE, you should add me on Bloglovin, as well as all your other favorite blogs!

F.I.T. Presentation

The Monday after Sakura Matsuri, I had my little presentation on Japanese Fashion in the West at the Fashion Institute of Technology. It was nothing big, just Dr. Kawamura's small class that studies Japanese fashion. I think it went pretty well, my friend Grace came along to model lolita clothing while I was more representative of gyaru. Wishing I looked more together because I looked so washed out from the weeks before. Makeup and everything seemed bad because I was in between being lazy, tired (it was so early in the morning e_e) and trying to look the part. Well...

Outfit shot, once everything was said and done...
D.I.A. hoodie, MARS-esque tights, my OTK boots from taobao.. kind of wishing I had gotten my more recent purchases before this picture LOL also need more belts...

Grace's outfit~

Pearl cross

Some more camwhore shots once I finally got home from eating lunch and stuff with Grace and her friend:

Yeah... I look so tired. I think I was up all night the night before so that didn't help much..

Dr. Kawamura was nice enough to make little gift bags for us as thanks for the presentation! It was full  of these Japanese goodies and whatnot~

Potholders... coasters for soups and drinks.. a leopard print tote within a matching pouch (bagception), a cute brown&pink phone charm, and two mini cupcakes in a cute little pink container wrapped with a hairbow (not shown, I sort of ate them before I took the picture = =), and then also a signed copy of her school book entitled "Fashioning Japanese Subcultures". So happy! Especially for the book! xD I hope to do a review on it soon~

Hanami Season 1

I find it a blessing that nowadays you can enjoy iconic events and things from all over the world. Hanami season has always been a favorite part of spring since my weaboo days in high school. Back then it was always about it simply being Japanese and often seen in anime and stuff like that, but as I got older I started to enjoy the actual beauty of the cherry blossoms, and all flowering trees similar to it. I don't know if I'll ever be a serious horticulturist, but growing up with my mom who always had a green thumb, I wouldn't be surprised.

I was lucky enough to see most of the trees in almost every blooming stage, which made them more fascinating to me. This specific set of photos were from a lolita meet I had a week before Brooklyn's Botanical Garden's Sakura Matsuri.

Kawaii International Ep #10

I didn't expect my image to pop up in the 10th Kawaii International Episode at all-- I had no knowledge of it until I suddenly got the e-mail from NHK the night before, asking me to support xD Like WUT WHAT'S GOING ON?

Since it was so last minute and I was booked that weekend, I missed the airing... I managed to catch the episode via Youtube, though it was all choppy stuff. But then Kawaii International was kind enough to send me a disc copy!

Everyone else who had watched it was telling me "omg you're gonna have feels amber" "there was this one shop girl that said something really sweet you're gonna cry", and I was sitting here like WHAT. So when I got a hold of the video I fast-forwarded right to that part.

(right-click and open in New Tab for full-size)

...Yeah, I almost cried. Though it was more of a shriek and dying inside - kind of cry, hah. But there was something so heartfelt about her comment towards me, it really made me feel really good. Like REALLY, really good.

When I first entered the contest I didn't like the outfit at all (I still don't LOL) but the fact that Ayano saw all these special little details in spite of it being a lolita dress blew my mind. I didn't like the shoes at the time (I've modded them since-- still didn't make a post about it yet = w=) but she still liked them and she payed attention to the little things like the nails and hair and they called it simplistically cute. And that landed me in 1st place. I remember screaming when I first heard from friends, and then when I saw it for myself.

So seeing someone, especially from outside the hime/lolita fashion complimenting me and my makeup and stuff makes me feel so good. It's not even like "omglol nipponpplz called me kawaii", but having them see my look and compliment it and point out the little details... it's a really good feeling, especially for the bit of extra elbow grease I'd have to give out to dress up due to importing and being taller and thicker than what the brands' market's norm is.

I have no doubt in my mind that one day it'll happen again. And I can't wait. ♥

Random Church OOTD

A few weeks ago I was playing around with some of my Liz Lisa goods and make a cute casualish lolita outfit for service that day~

I had just washed my hair within that week and I was a too lazy to really flat-iron it-- so I thought of this hairstyle instead. When I thought it up, I was thinking of some Micky/Minnie Mouse designs I've seen where their ears are sort of propped to the side. It came out pretty cute, although a bit messy! Next time I attempt it I plan to clean it up and figure out how to part it nicely and stuff.

The outfit itself is pretty light-- not too heavy with lolita accessories and things~

Rundown:
Top - Liz Lisa
Skirt, hair ties - Baby, the Stars Shine Bright
Shoes - An*tai*na
Fur collar - Forever 21
Other accessories (not seen)~ all offbrand

Kawaii International recording~ 1/10/13-1/21/2013

I was invited to be a part of a recording for NHK Kawaii International~ since I was the grand prize winner for their hime contest last year, they contacted me to be a guest on their show via Skype chat! It was very difficult to get it all in order, but at the end it turned out to be a very good recording :3

Since I run the local NYC Lolitas group on facebook and livejournal, they asked me if I can gather a handful of my friends for the recording as well~ it was difficult because it required people to stay up all night on a weekday-- but somehow we were able to get enough people, and we managed to stay up through a 7-hour, latenight recording! Craziness!

A week or so before the actual recording, we gathered near 42nd street to record outfit shots and introductions~ luckily one of the girls had a college friend who was a videographer, who was willing to give us some pretty awesome videos for our intro!

My OOTD real quick:

Headbow: Baby the Stars Shine Bright, JSK: Innocent World, Cardigan: Liz Lisa, jewelry and stuff you'll see later on. Coat (not seen): Angelic Pretty~

Some shots from some of our videos that I screencapped~

Jovon and Lexie during filming ~This was actually two shots, the second being part of Lexie's full body coord shot, but it's so interesting how this came out when I uploaded it xD haa

Yaniseee

Myself....

...And myself reacting to my derp LOL

Laura derpin' like a qt~

A shot of us taking strolling shots~

I had this idea to get our pictures on the billboard for it but it didn't come out as we expected, plus we had to wait an extra long time in the cold for it to even pop up on the screen. The photo was still super cute though! Just wouldn't do it again.

Group shot!

And more camwhoring sessions:

Susan and Yani~

burand shots

Laura and Nina~

The billboard shot when it did pop up... we expected it to be fullscreen...

Some last candid shots in Times Square....

Afterwards we walked Midtown East to my favorite spot Izakaya Riki for some beer, curry, and okonomi goodness

I think we were all too hungry at that point for any good foodnom shots lol.

Then maybe 10 days later was the actual Skype recording~
NHK graciously provided us with a studio to film in, with a recording crew to assist us and providing us with multiple laptops to Skype with, and a camera in case any connection problems occured.

My camwhore shots off my camera~

Outfit rundown:
Bow: Angelic Pretty, OP was the LaPafait OP I won, Denim Jacket: Yumetenbo, Necklace Jesus Diamante, Tights were from F21, and the shoes I modded myself! I'll have a post about that specifically in a bit...

The last of my camho shots~

That bathroom... was perfect. LOL In every way.

Since we were in there for almost 7 hours... they also provided us with a lot of good ; w;  In between tests and stuff we were running around, doing hair, doing makeup, and then sitting, eating, being silly.
There were a couple of times when they were doing video/audio tests and left us on the screen...
the producer and director of the show were sitting in the hosts seats chilling and all you saw was us... on the TV screen behind them.... doing Gangnam style and dancing to Kyary Pamyu Pamyu LOL

They didn't notice at all... until minutes later someone pointed us out to them and they turned and looked like wuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut the hell is going on lololo
I wish we had video of that xD Man oh man..

lol Laura and Yani

Laura and Nina

Grace

Lexie

LOL Susan

At this point we were staring at the screen while the Japanese were practicing their segments...

You can probably recognize Moco, I think Re:No? and whomever else.

Our main idol focus was with Himena Ousaki!!! We were dying inside.
Originally it was going to be Himena and Midori Fukasawa as Hime(gyaru) and lolita model representatives, respectively, but then Midori dropped out suddenly and so it was only Himena ; u; but we still had our fill of cuteness.

At that time she couldn't see us, even though we could see her. Eventually it was revealed to us that we were a "surprise" to the models who were there!

I won't go into detail about the filming and what was said... but I wasn't too nervous talking to/about Himena. I was more nervous about the fact that I was being recorded!

I derped and I messed up once... and I covered my face in embarrassment and Himena was just sitting there giggling ; u; but then she also had her derpy times and we were just sort of laughing at each other's mistakes~
I wish we had more time to ask questions, because of time we didn't follow the script to the T, but it was so good to be able to talk to Himena, as well as the other models.

EGG model Yun was there representing gyaru, but there was also a French gal group that focused on her. Also Pikarin, but she was mainly talking about her new music and stuff.

After filming was done, the Kawaii.i team did a little something for us and brought their laptop to Himena so we were seeing her and interacting with her on Skype!!! We totally freaked. Like a box of kittens were dumped all over us.

Death by kawaii.
